This photo shows a work in process
as noted by the wood anchor handle protruding from the
salmon's back. I use this handle to mount the fish onto a
stand while doing detailed scale carving, application of
airbrushed paint, and touch up. |

This tropical Angle Fish was
carved after having spent several winters snorkeling in
Hawaii. In this scene I wanted to give a sense of aliveness
as to what one actually sees beneath the surface of a
tropical reef. In addition to the fish, the other pieces are
also carved - various types of coral and a sea urchin. This
scene is mounted on a hardwood base. |

This was one of my first
entries into competition carving outside of Alaska. Although
I was an unknown to the International Fish Carving
Championship group, I won 2nd Place when the judges decided
not to award a 1st place prize at all.
In this scene, the halibut
(a bottom feeding fish) chases a squid that is using an
anchor chain to hide. All the pieces are carved - the
halibut, the squid, even the anchor chain and it is mounted
on a base that gives the appearance of a sandy, rocky ocean
bottom. |
