Many of my designs and techniques are inspired by the native peoples of Alaska and the Pacific Coast. Each piece is meticulously hand drawn on paper, then carved in stages. Detailed carving, whether feathers or fish scales, then realistically applied painting methods are hallmarks of my style. Fish carvings are often mistaken for specimens prepared by a taxidermist. I have also done commission work for The Alaska Museum in Anchorage.

This native-inspired masks is carved from xxxxxx. The life-like feathers are inserted into small holes drilled into the top of the mask. Guinea hen feathers on leather thongs protrude from the mouth of this piece to symbolize xxxxx. Acrylic paint was then used to highlight feathers and other features.

This type of mask is modeled after a xxx people or xxx style.

This box is made without any nails. It measures zzz x zzz. Made from Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), the wood is soaked and then carefully manipulated. This process is repeated for xxx days or xx, being extremely careful not to crack the wood as it is bent into a square shape and held in place with clamps. After a sanding to a fine finish, I painted a very traditional red and black design modeled on the xxx Indian designs. The lid was cut with a saw and also sanded to a fine finish.

In many of my fish carvings I endeavor to give a sense of movement to the piece. Sometimes this means carving additional pieces or incorporating natural elements such as driftwood into the work. For mounted works I often create carved stones, flies, plant life or other elements to enhance the overall display to create a sense of realism and beauty.
